History Of The Hare
1706 was a historically important year. One of Britain’s greatest generals John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough leading an allied force of Dutch and British troops defeated the French at the battle of Ramillies, in the ‘War of the Spanish
Succession’, (1701-1714)
This victory allowed Marlborough to gain control over the Spanish Netherlands.
The Royal Navy had forced the French to abandon the siege of Barcelona, and Lord Henry Galway captured Madrid.
1706 was also a good year for the residents of the small recently built hamletof Brooks Hill, on land originally owned by Sir Edward North who was Lord of the Manor.
Thomas Clutterbuck who owned Stanmore’s very own brewery leased a cottage to convert to the Public House we now know as ‘The Hare’.
For the workers who were employed in agriculture, or in the extensive brickworks owned by the Bodymeade family the arrival of 'The Hare’ was a chance after their labours to enjoy good ale and good company, which is every Englishman’s right.
There have been many landlords over the years, to many to mention. However the Foskett family from the year 1841 to the turn of the century were notable. In 1959 a former professional footballer George Hill who played for Luton took over from a Miss Ginn who had been landlady from 1934.
In the North East Corner of the Hare there is a very rare Sarsen stone, which is a sixty million year old silicified sandstone, normally found in the Marlborough Hills. Sarsen stones were used in the building of Stonehenge.
‘The Hare’, happily situated in one of the finest areas in Harrow, with it’s historic connections with Harrow School and Winston Churchill, Handel, Gilbert and Sullivan and the raising of the 77th Regiment of Foot, later to become that very fine regiment, the Middlesex Regiment, who’s nickname was ‘The Diehards’ due to their valour at the Battle of Albuhera, will continue to maintain the 300 year old tradition of offering quality ale, fine wines and good companionship, will in addition now offer superior food.
